Performance Drapery Fabrics
Engineered weaves that hold their hand against sun, salt air, and a decade of daily operation.
What is this fabric?
Performance drapery fabrics are engineered cloths — solution-dyed yarns, UV-stabilized fibers, and tighter weaves — designed to perform in conditions that defeat natural linen and silk.
The studio specifies performance cloth in three conditions: high-UV exposures (west and south Los Angeles elevations), coastal residences exposed to salt air, and homes with daily, motorized cycling where dimensional stability matters.
Light control
Medium to high opacity depending on weave; linen-look performance weaves hold 70–85% of incoming light.
Privacy
Tight performance weaves are fully opaque day and night.
Acoustics
Comparable to medium-weight linen with interlining. Specify acoustic interlining for dedicated absorption.
UV protection
The single highest-performing category for UV. Solution-dyed yarns retain color for 10–15 years on direct exposure.
Durability
20–30 year service life on interior-mount drapery. The studio's default cloth for any oceanfront or high-UV elevation.
Appearance
Engineered. Reads as restrained and contemporary rather than artisanal.
Motorization
The ideal cloth for motorized programs — dimensionally stable across humidity and temperature cycling.
Maintenance
Vacuum quarterly. Spot-clean with mild solvent. Many weaves are water-cleanable in place.
Thermal performance
Tightly woven performance cloth reduces solar heat gain through glass by 25–45% when paired with interlining. Solution-dyed fiber holds dimensional stability across 30°F humidity-driven swings without sagging.
Typical cost range
Mid to high. Performance face cloth runs $75–$210 per yard at the trade; a fully fabricated, motorized-ready performance drapery program runs $200–$450 per square foot of opening, installed.

- Dimensionally stable under heat, humidity, and salt air
- Cleans with mild solvent — many weaves are water-cleanable
- Available in linen-look, silk-look, and sheer expressions
- Hand is firmer than pure linen or silk — the cloth reads engineered, not artisanal
- Premium performance weaves cost more per yard than mid-range natural linen
- Specify linen-look performance weaves when the room expects a natural cloth
- Pair with ripple fold, wave fold, or Euro pleat for clean tracking

“If the home is on the water or the glass faces west, I specify performance cloth without debate. Linen is the cloth my clients want to talk about; performance is the cloth their architecture is actually asking for. A linen-look performance weave from a European mill resolves both — and it will still look correct fifteen years in.”

Questions homeowners ask about Performance
- Is performance fabric the same as outdoor fabric?
- No. Outdoor cloth is a subset; the studio specifies indoor-rated performance weaves that read as natural linen or silk but carry the UV and dimensional stability of engineered fiber.
- Will performance fabric look like a hotel?
- Not when specified correctly. Linen-look performance weaves from European mills are indistinguishable from natural linen at viewing distance — they simply outlast it.

Talk with Olga about whether Performance is the right cloth for your room.
Cloth is a 20-year decision. Every consultation begins with the architecture and the orientation — we will tell you which cloth the room is asking for, even if it is not the one you came in expecting.
Duroque does not mail fabric samples. Selection and sourcing happen in a private design consultation — at our West Hollywood studio or on-site at your residence, hotel, restaurant, or yacht — where cloth is reviewed against the actual light, architecture, and program of the room.
