The Styles

Flat, Relaxed, Tailored, Motorized & Blackout

Flat Roman Shades

A clean rectangular face when lowered, crisp folds when raised. The studio’s default modern Roman — specified for kitchens, libraries, offices, and any window where the cloth should read as architecture rather than ornament. Belgian linen, cotton, and structured wool blends are the canonical cloths.

Relaxed Roman Shades

A softened lower hem that arcs gently when the shade is raised — the most forgiving Roman profile and the right choice for kitchens, breakfast rooms, primary baths, and any room where the cloth should feel hand-finished rather than engineered. Cotton sateen, washed linen, and lightweight silk blends are typical.

Tailored Roman Shades

Structured horizontal folds held by sewn rod pockets, with crisp returns and a precise reveal. The most architectural Roman style — specified for libraries, formal dining rooms, hospitality suites, and traditional residences where the discipline of the fold matters as much as the cloth.

Motorized Roman Shades

Hardwired DC or Somfy battery motors integrated on Lutron, Crestron, Control4, Savant, or Josh.ai. The canonical smart-home Roman: silent, programmable, scene-driven. Specified at framing whenever possible — pockets, conduit, and blocking sized to the actual hardware.

Blackout Roman Shades

Three-pass blackout lining on a Roman face, with side channels or extended returns for true theatrical darkness. The right choice for primary suites, nurseries, screening rooms, and any room where the cloth must serve both daylight and sleep without a second panel.

Layered Roman + Sheer Programs

A linen sheer drapery layer at the architrave with a Roman shade behind it — the cleanest layered profile when ceiling depth is limited. Commissioned together so the heading, return, and reveal are sized for both cloths from the first measure.

The Cloth

Designer Fabrics with Body

Designer Fabrics

Cloth is specified from the studio’s curated mills — Holland & Sherry, Dedar, Romo, Pierre Frey, Pollack, Schumacher, Kravet Couture, Zoffany, Robert Allen, Pindler, and the studio’s own Belgian and Italian linen sources. Roman shades demand cloth with body; not every fabric panel makes a serviceable Roman.

Linen, Cotton, Wool & Silk Blends

Belgian and Italian linens for relaxed Romans. Cotton sateen and cotton-linen for flat Romans in primary baths and kitchens. Structured wool blends for tailored Romans in libraries and offices. Silk blends only where the room rewards the hand and the cloth is protected from direct UV.

Performance & Outdoor Romans

Performance linens, solar-control weaves, and UV-stabilized outdoor cloth for west-facing rooms, ocean-view homes, and covered terraces. Specified by exposure, not by the swatch book.

Where They Live

Residential, Commercial & Architectural Applications

Residential — Primary Suites, Kitchens & Libraries

The most common Roman application in Los Angeles. Flat or relaxed Romans in kitchens and breakfast rooms; tailored Romans in libraries and formal rooms; motorized blackout Romans in primary suites and nurseries. Commonly layered with sheer drapery in primary suites.

Commercial & Hospitality

Boutique hotel guest rooms, restaurant private dining, executive offices, retail flagships, and law-firm boardrooms. Inherently fire-retardant cloth (NFPA 701 / IFR) and engineered hardware are the default; the studio writes the spec to code from the first measure.

Architectural & Specialty Windows

Romans are the right answer for many architectural windows where drapery is wrong: deep-set casements, transoms, narrow side-lights, and any opening where a stacked panel reads as bulk. Inside-mount Romans with engineered side reveals are the studio’s typical specification.

From the Studio

The Roman is a Discipline of Cloth and Reveal

A Roman shade reads as well as its cloth and its reveal. The cloth decides whether the fold is crisp, soft, or structured; the reveal decides whether the shade reads as architecture or as a window product. Both are specified on site, against the actual window, before the workroom cuts a yard.

Pair Roman shades with sheer drapery for layered primary-suite programs, or with blackout drapery where theatrical darkness is the brief. Motorized Romans are commissioned on the home’s control system — see smart home drapery integration and motorized drapery. Cloth is selected from the fabric library and the studio’s curated mills.

FAQs · Roman Shades Los Angeles

Flat, Relaxed, Tailored, Motorized & Blackout

What is the difference between flat, relaxed, and tailored Roman shades?

A flat Roman has a clean rectangular face with crisp horizontal folds when raised. A relaxed Roman has a softened lower hem that arcs gently — the most hand-finished profile. A tailored Roman is structured by sewn rod pockets, holding precise horizontal folds — the most architectural profile. The studio specifies all three; the right choice is set by the room’s discipline and the cloth’s body.

Can Roman shades be motorized?

Yes — and motorized Romans are one of the studio’s most-specified smart-home products in Los Angeles. Hardwired DC motors are the default for new construction; Somfy battery motors for retrofits. Commissioned on Lutron, Crestron, Control4, Savant, or Josh.ai alongside lighting and drapery.

Are blackout Roman shades effective for primary suites and nurseries?

When specified with three-pass blackout lining and side channels or extended returns, blackout Romans deliver theatrical darkness without a second panel. For homeowners who do not want drapery in a primary suite, a blackout Roman is often the right answer.

What fabrics work best for Roman shades?

Cloth with body. Belgian and Italian linens for relaxed Romans; cotton sateen and cotton-linen for flat Romans; structured wool blends for tailored Romans; performance and solar-control cloth for west-facing exposures. Very lightweight or slubby fabrics often do not make serviceable Romans — the studio mocks the cloth before fabrication.

Inside mount or outside mount for a Roman shade?

Inside mount is the studio’s default when reveal depth is sufficient — the cloth reads as architecture, framed by the casing. Outside mount is specified when the reveal is too shallow, when blackout coverage is critical, or when the architecture asks for a wider visual field. The decision is made on site, with the actual window in front of us.

Can Roman shades be layered with drapery?

Yes — layered Roman-and-drapery programs are common in primary suites, formal living rooms, and hospitality interiors. The Roman handles daylight and privacy; the drapery handles softness, acoustics, and evening dressing. The studio commissions both cloths from the first measure so the heading, return, and reveal are sized together.

How long do custom Roman shades take to fabricate?

Typical lead time is 8–12 weeks from approved specification to install, depending on cloth availability, mill cut times, and motorization. The studio writes a calendarized program at consultation so the install date is committed before fabrication begins.
