Most homeowners choose drapery fabric the way they choose upholstery: by color and hand. It is a forgivable instinct and an expensive mistake. The cloth has to perform against eight separate conditions — light, privacy, acoustics, UV, durability, appearance, motorization, and maintenance — and the architecture, orientation, and program of the room dictate which of those conditions are controlling.
From open-weave linen sheers that filter daylight to triple-pass blackout cloth that eliminates it. Light control is a function of cloth, lining, and install — not cloth alone.
Daytime privacy and nighttime privacy are different specifications. Most luxury programs live in a layered system — sheer plus blackout — to resolve both.
Heavyweight wools, velvets, and acoustic interlining can shift a room's NRC from 0.10 to 0.75. Standard drapery contributes; dedicated acoustic cloth performs.
In Los Angeles, UV exposure determines cloth life. Solution-dyed performance weaves and UV-treated naturals carry 3–5x the life of untreated linen on equivalent exposure.
10–15 years for cotton; 15–25 for natural linen; 20–30 for mohair velvet and performance weaves. Cloth choice is a 20-year decision.

Performance cloth and heavyweight linen are the studio's defaults for motorized programs. Dimensional stability under humidity and temperature cycling is the controlling specification.
Annual professional dusting on-site for all programs. Dry-cleaning at 4–7 year intervals depending on cloth. Velvet and silk require specialty cleaners.
