Marine-Grade Drapery Fabrics

IMO MED-certified, salt-air-stable cloth engineered for motor yachts, sailing yachts, and superyacht interiors operating in Pacific and Mediterranean waters.

What is this fabric?

Marine-grade drapery fabric is a specification category that exceeds residential performance cloth in three controlling areas: salt-air corrosion resistance, IMO MED (Marine Equipment Directive) flammability certification, and dimensional stability under shipboard humidity cycling.

The studio specifies marine cloth for owners' staterooms, guest cabins, main salons, and skylounges on yachts berthed in Marina del Rey, Newport Coast, and the Mediterranean. Cloth selection coordinates with marine hardware — stainless steel or anodized aluminum tracks, never bronze or brass.

Performance Specifications

Light control

Marine sheers preserve view through saloon glass; marine blackout linings deliver total darkness in staterooms at anchor or underway.

Privacy

Fully opaque when specified as a layered stateroom system.

Acoustics

Marine velvets and heavyweight wools contribute measurably to stateroom acoustic comfort — particularly relevant on yachts with deck-mounted generators or stabilizer noise.

UV protection

Solution-dyed marine cloth carries 10–15 year UV ratings on full Pacific exposure.

Durability

8–15 years depending on cloth and exposure. Marine cloth ages faster than residential equivalents — the salt-air environment is unforgiving.

Appearance

Tailored, restrained, and yacht-appropriate. Reads as part of the joinery and surface package, never as residential drapery transplanted onboard.

Motorization

Marine DC motors with sealed enclosures and corrosion-resistant carriers — Somfy Sonesse Marine and equivalent. Integrated with the yacht's control system (Crestron, Savant, or proprietary).

Maintenance

Vacuum monthly; dockside dry-cleaning every 12–18 months by a marine-specialty contractor; inspect at every 5-year survey.

Thermal performance

Marine blackout linings reduce stateroom solar gain by 50–70% on tropical-water programs — critical for HVAC load management at anchor.

Typical cost range

Ultra-premium. Marine-grade cloth runs $180–$520 per yard; fully fabricated and dockside-installed yacht drapery is typically priced per stateroom assembly and coordinated with the refit yard.

Best applications
  • Owner's staterooms
  • Guest cabins
  • Main salons and skylounges
  • Yacht dining rooms
  • Bridge and pilothouse privacy panels
Advantages
  • IMO MED certification accepted by flag-state inspectors worldwide
  • Engineered for salt-air exposure without fiber breakdown
  • Lightweight relative to residential equivalents — critical for displacement and trim
  • Available in linen-look and velvet expressions
Limitations
  • Limited color palette relative to residential cloth
  • Higher cloth cost — certification and engineering carry a premium
  • Specialty cleaners required dockside; not all residential cleaners handle marine cloth
Design considerations
  • Coordinate cloth weight with the captain and the yacht's interior weight budget
  • Specify marine-grade hardware in parallel — cloth and hardware fail together
  • Plan for refurbishment cycle aligned with the yacht's 5-year survey
Recommended drapery styles & pleats
  • Ripple fold
  • Wave fold
  • Pinch pleat (classic motor yachts)

Designer's Note · Olga Rechdouni, ASID

Yachts are the most unforgiving brief in our practice. The cloth has to pass inspection, fit the weight budget, survive salt air, and look correct in two countries' climates. I specify marine-rated cloth and marine-rated hardware as a single system — and I plan the refurbishment cycle around the survey, not the design schedule.

Frequently Asked

Questions homeowners ask about Marine-Grade

Why does residential cloth fail on a yacht?
Salt air corrodes the fiber and breaks down dye in months rather than years. Residential cloth without IMO MED certification also cannot be installed on a commercially registered vessel under flag-state inspection.
Do you specify for sailing yachts as well as motor yachts?
Yes. Sailing yacht specification adds dimensional stability under heel as a controlling concern — cloth that hangs correctly on hard at anchor and underway in a seaway.

Talk with Olga about whether Marine-Grade is the right cloth for your room.

Cloth is a 20-year decision. Every consultation begins with the architecture and the orientation — we will tell you which cloth the room is asking for, even if it is not the one you came in expecting.

Duroque does not mail fabric samples. Selection and sourcing happen in a private design consultation — at our West Hollywood studio or on-site at your residence, hotel, restaurant, or yacht — where cloth is reviewed against the actual light, architecture, and program of the room.
