Silk Drapery Fabrics

Dupioni, taffeta, and silk-blend cloths — the most luminous and formal natural fiber in residential drapery.

What is this fabric?

Silk drapery fabrics are the most luminous and formal natural fiber in residential drapery. The studio specifies silk in three weaves: dupioni for its slubbed texture and shimmer; taffeta for its crisp fold and high formality; and silk blends — silk-linen, silk-wool — for residences that want the luminosity of silk without its fragility.

Silk is sensitive to UV. We specify it only on north and east elevations, or layered behind a UV-blocking sheer or roller shade on south and west exposures.

Performance Specifications

Light control

Medium to high opacity depending on weight; lined silk holds 75–85% of incoming light.

Privacy

Fully opaque when lined.

Acoustics

Modest absorption — comparable to medium-weight cotton.

UV protection

Low — silk is fragile under UV. Always specify a layered system on south and west exposures.

Durability

15–25 years on protected exposures; 3–5 years on direct west sun.

Appearance

The most luminous and formal cloth in residential drapery.

Motorization

Compatible — but the studio rarely specifies silk on high-cycle motorized openings.

Maintenance

Dry-clean by a silk-specialty cleaner every 5–7 years. Never machine-wash or steam directly.

Thermal performance

Modest on its own. Interlined silk provides moderate insulation against single-pane glass. Silk's thermal value is secondary to its visual luminosity — it is not the cloth to specify for solar gain reduction.

Typical cost range

High to ultra-luxury. Silk dupioni runs $120–$280 per yard at the trade; silk taffeta $180–$420; figured silks from European mills routinely exceed $600 per yard. A fabricated silk drapery program runs $340–$780 per square foot of opening, installed.

Best applications
  • Formal dining rooms
  • Estate-scale primary suites
  • Libraries and studies
  • North and east-facing formal rooms
Advantages
  • Most luminous natural fiber — catches and reflects light beautifully
  • Crisp, formal fold under any hand-tacked heading
  • Pairs naturally with traditional and classical architecture
  • Available in solid, woven, and figured expressions
Limitations
  • Fragile under direct sunlight — fades and weakens within 3–5 years on west exposure
  • Most expensive natural cloth in the studio's catalog
  • Requires expert dry cleaning
Design considerations
  • Specify only on north and east elevations, or behind a UV-blocking sheer
  • Always interline — silk requires structure to fall correctly
  • Pair with French pleat, goblet pleat, or pinch pleat
Recommended drapery styles & pleats
  • French pleat
  • Goblet pleat
  • Pinch pleat
  • Smocked headings (formal rooms only)

Designer's Note · Olga Rechdouni, ASID

I love silk. I also respect what it cannot do. I will not specify silk on a west or south Los Angeles elevation without a UV-blocking sheer or roller shade in front of it — the cloth will weaken and shred at the folds within three years on direct sun. On a north or east room with controlled light, silk is unmatched.

Frequently Asked

Questions homeowners ask about Silk

Will silk drapery work in Los Angeles?
On north and east elevations, yes. On west and south exposures, only layered behind UV protection. The studio walks the room and the orientation before specifying silk.
What is the difference between dupioni and taffeta?
Dupioni is slubbed and textural; taffeta is crisp and smooth. Dupioni reads as artisanal; taffeta as formal.

Talk with Olga about whether Silk is the right cloth for your room.

Cloth is a 20-year decision. Every consultation begins with the architecture and the orientation — we will tell you which cloth the room is asking for, even if it is not the one you came in expecting.

Duroque does not mail fabric samples. Selection and sourcing happen in a private design consultation — at our West Hollywood studio or on-site at your residence, hotel, restaurant, or yacht — where cloth is reviewed against the actual light, architecture, and program of the room.
