Drapery Styles Guide · Relaxed

Grommet Drapery

A metal-eyelet heading that slides directly over the rod — relaxed contemporary, never architectural.

What is this style?

Grommet drapery uses metal eyelets punched along the top hem of the panel, sliding directly onto a decorative rod. The fabric falls in soft, evenly-spaced waves, similar in rhythm to a ripple fold but without the carrier system.

The studio specifies grommet only in casual contemporary, lake-house, and secondary-bedroom contexts. It is not an architectural heading and does not read correctly in formal rooms.

Best applications
  • Casual contemporary bedrooms
  • Lake and mountain houses
  • Secondary bedrooms
  • Game rooms and dens
Best room types
  • Secondary bedrooms
  • Casual sitting rooms
  • Game rooms
  • Guest cottages
Best architectural styles
  • Casual contemporary
  • Mountain
  • Lake house
  • Modern farmhouse
Fabric recommendations
  • Medium-weight cottons and cotton-linen blends
  • Performance weaves for high-use family rooms
  • Light wool flannels for mountain residences
Ceiling height considerations

Reads correctly at 8 to 10 ft. Above 10 ft. the heading reads as casual rather than architectural.

Motorization compatibility

Not compatible with motorization. Grommet panels do not traverse cleanly on motorized carriers.

Stacking note

Stacks at roughly 25–30% of the rod width when fully open — wider stack-back than ripple fold.

Advantages

  • Relaxed, contemporary read appropriate for casual rooms
  • Lower fabrication cost than hand-tacked headings
  • Soft, even wave without the precision of a ripple fold
Frequently Asked

Questions homeowners ask about Grommet

Why does the studio rarely specify grommet?
It reads as casual in any serious residence, cannot be motorized, and tends to look dated within a few seasons. We reserve it for secondary rooms in casual residences.
What size grommet is correct?
1.5" inner diameter on standard residential rods. Larger eyelets read commercial; smaller ones bind on the rod.
