Fire-Retardant Drapery

For coastal California homes — Malibu, Pacific Palisades, and the canyons — fire-retardant drapery is no longer optional. It is a baseline specification, and the way it is achieved matters as much as whether it is.

Fire-Retardant Drapery
Why Choose Fire-Retardant

Why Choose This Style

There are two paths to fire-retardant drapery: inherently fire-retardant (IFR) fibers woven into the cloth, and topical FR treatments applied after weaving. We specify inherently FR fabrics whenever possible — they cannot wash out, dry-clean out, or sun-degrade out of the cloth.

Our FR specifications meet or exceed NFPA 701, California Title 19, and the requirements increasingly written into coastal-fire-zone residential underwriting.

Specified well, FR drapery is indistinguishable from any other luxury drapery: the same hand, the same drape, the same depth of fold. Specified poorly, it stiffens, shines, and ages badly.

Inherently FR fabrics are also one of our most-requested specifications for children's rooms and nurseries. Parents want the softness and color of a real drapery panel with the reassurance of a fabric that will not sustain a flame — and IFR linens, cottons, and sheers carry that property permanently, with no chemical treatment to off-gas or wash out.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between IFR and FR-treated drapery?
Inherently FR (IFR) fabrics carry the fire-retardant property at the fiber level — it is permanent. FR-treated fabrics are sprayed or dipped after weaving and lose their rating over time, especially after cleaning.
Does FR drapery meet Malibu insurance requirements?
Inherently FR drapery specified to NFPA 701 typically satisfies coastal-zone underwriting. We provide certification documents with every installation.
Can FR drapery be soft and luxurious?
Yes. The current generation of IFR fabrics — Belgian linens, technical wools, and engineered sheers — is indistinguishable in hand from non-FR equivalents.
Are fire-retardant fabrics safe for nurseries and children's rooms?
Yes — and they are widely specified for exactly that reason. We use inherently FR fabrics in nurseries and children's rooms so the flame-resistant property is built into the fiber itself, with no topical chemical treatment. They wash, drape, and age like any other luxury cloth.
