Fire-Retardant Drapery for Coastal California Homes

What homeowners in Malibu, Pacific Palisades, and the canyons should know about specifying inherently fire-retardant textiles.

Coastal California has changed the conversation around residential drapery. What was once a code requirement for hotels and theaters is now a baseline specification for any home in a designated fire zone.

The critical distinction is between inherently fire-retardant (IFR) fabrics — woven from FR fibers — and topically treated fabrics, which are sprayed after weaving. Only IFR carries a permanent rating. Treated fabrics lose their rating to time, sun, and cleaning.

We specify inherently FR fabrics for every Malibu, Pacific Palisades, Bel Air, and canyon project we accept. The hand is indistinguishable from non-FR equivalents. The rating is permanent. The certification documents accompany the installation.
