Old-Hollywood Velvet Theater Drapery with Tasseled Swag Valances — a portfolio project documenting a window treatment approach in Holmby Hills, CA. A studio reference in design intent, material specification, and architectural reasoning.

The Brief

A private screening room in a Holmby Hills estate, finished in green-and-gold malachite-look marble, deep oxblood velvet seating and a coffered gilded ceiling. The owners wanted the drapery to read as a 1930s Golden Age picture palace — opulent, tasseled, theatrical — while still working acoustically and hiding the dedicated bar and storage niches set between the marble pilasters.

The Design Response

Floor-to-ceiling oxblood cotton velvet panels framing each marble pilaster, hand-pleated to full fullness with bullion-fringe leading edges and gold metallic tassel tiebacks. Swagged and jabot valances above each opening to crown the room and tie back to the gilded coffered ceiling. Panels function as working drapery: dressed open during cocktail hour to reveal the lit bar niches and pulled closed during screenings for additional acoustic absorption across the side walls.

Materials & Performance

IFR-treated heavyweight cotton velvet in deep oxblood, full fullness, ceiling-to-floor; bullion fringe leading edge; antique-gold metallic rope tiebacks with carved wood tassels.

Concealed traverse track behind the swagged valance returns; hand-built valance frames upholstered on-site; bullion and tassel trim hand-stitched in the studio.

Valances built and trimmed in the studio, set first to true the cornice line into the gilded ceiling. Velvet panels hung from concealed traverse track, dressed and steam-trained over the raked carpet to break evenly at the floor. Tassel tiebacks set after acoustic measurements were taken open and closed.

The Result

Reverberation across the side walls drops measurably when the panels are drawn closed for a screening; opened, the velvet stacks tightly between the marble pilasters and the bar niches read fully. The room now performs as a working acoustic theater and reads as a Golden Age picture palace from the first frame.
