Motorized Drapery Buying Guide
What to specify, what to avoid, and why most motorized drapery in Los Angeles is specified incorrectly.
Motorized drapery, specified well, is one of the most satisfying interventions available in a modern home. Specified badly, it is a daily source of friction.
We specify hardwired DC motors — Lutron, Somfy, or Crestron — for all primary residences. Battery motors are acceptable only for retrofits where wiring is impossible, and even then the homeowner should expect a maintenance cycle.
Integration with the home's existing keypad ecosystem is non-negotiable. A motorized drapery that requires its own remote has failed at the specification stage. Done correctly, the drapery becomes part of the home's morning, afternoon, evening, and away scenes — and the homeowner forgets it is motorized at all.
