Motorized vs Manual Drapery for Large Windows
Above a certain scale, motorization is not a luxury feature. It is a structural specification.
On any drop above 9 ft. or any width above 12 ft., hand-traverse fails inside two years. The cloth weight is too high, the daily cycle count is too low, and the heading distorts under the force required to traverse it manually.
When manual is acceptable
Drops under 9 ft., widths under 12 ft., single-panel openings, low-cycle rooms (formal dining, formal living). Hand-finished European hardware with a quality wand.
When motorization is non-negotiable
Drops above 12 ft., widths above 12 ft., daily-use rooms (primary suite, great room, media room), inaccessible mounts (clerestory, atrium, stairwell), solar-tracking briefs.
