Designing a Relaxed Venice Beach Interior with Natural Linen

The homeowners wanted the window treatments to reinforce the relaxed, natural character of their Venice beach house. A restrained palette of neutral 100% linen was selected to complement the home's white oak flooring and create continuity throughout the residence.

Rather than introducing heavy visual contrast at the windows, the treatments were designed to feel quiet and architectural, allowing the texture of natural linen and the existing materials of the house to work together.

Cordless Roman Shades Throughout the House

Cordless Roman shades provided a clean window-treatment solution for multiple rooms while maintaining the softness and texture of natural linen.

The overall material and design language continued through the kitchen, primary bathroom, office, spare bedrooms and other areas of the house, with individual treatments selected according to the privacy, sunlight and functional requirements of each room.

Layered Blackout Treatments for the Primary Bedroom

The primary bedroom required greater light control.

A 100% linen Roman shade with blackout lining provides one layer of coverage at the window. The drapery adds another level of flexibility, combining blackout drapery and linen drapery on two separate bronze-finish hybrid rod / track systems.

This layered approach maintains the relaxed linen aesthetic used throughout the house while providing additional light control for the bedroom. Inverted-Pleat Drapery on Bronze Hybrid Rod / Track Hardware

The drapery was fabricated with an inverted pleat, creating a tailored heading appropriate to the clean, understated character of the house.

Bronze-finish hybrid rod / track hardware was selected to coordinate with existing hardware and finishes in the residence.

The system provides the visual presence of a decorative rod while functioning as a track, with carriers, hooks and operating components concealed within the system for a clean appearance.

Five-Inch Drapery Returns for Additional Light Control

Strong sunlight at the Venice residence also influenced the technical detailing of the primary-bedroom drapery.

Approximately five-inch returns were created at the sides of the drapery, bringing the treatment back toward the wall and helping reduce the amount of sunlight entering around the outside edges of the panels. This was a project-specific construction detail rather than a guarantee of complete light elimination.

A Whole-House Window-Treatment Program

The same overall design vocabulary continues through the kitchen, primary bathroom, office, spare bedrooms and other areas of the Venice home.

Neutral linen, Roman shades and tailored drapery create visual continuity while allowing the individual treatment to respond to the requirements of each room.
