Designing Layered Sunbrella Outdoor Drapery

For this Thousand Oaks residence, the homeowners were creating a wraparound Trex deck with a covered outdoor dining and entertaining area designed to function as a true extension of the home.

House of Drapery by Duroque developed a two-layer outdoor drapery treatment using Sunbrella performance fabrics. A soft cream, linen-look Sunbrella fabric creates the lighter layer, filtering sunlight while preserving the open feeling of the surrounding landscape. A textured gray Sunbrella fabric adds depth, contrast and a more tailored architectural presence.

How the Outdoor Drapery Operates

Both layers were fabricated with French pleats and installed on bronze-finish H-track / rod-hybrid hardware. The covered structure is treated on three sides with two center-opening panels at each opening, allowing individual panels to be operated independently according to sun, privacy, wind and how the outdoor room is being used.

Designing Drapery for a Sloped Outdoor Deck

Because the wraparound deck follows a subtle slope, the hardware and finished drapery required careful adjustment to maintain a visually balanced relationship to the floor. The panels were intentionally kept slightly above the deck surface rather than allowed to drag, helping protect the outdoor fabric from dirt and moisture.

This approach preserves the long vertical lines of the floor-to-ceiling drapery while responding to the actual conditions of an exterior deck.

Managing Outdoor Drapery in a Windy Thousand Oaks Setting

Wind was another important consideration in this Thousand Oaks hillside setting. Decorative lemon-form metal wall brackets and coordinating fabric tiebacks provide secure points for managing the panels when open, while still allowing the drapery to be released and repositioned as needed.

Outdoor performance fabric is designed for exterior use, but exposed drapery can still benefit from additional protection during severe weather and prolonged periods of non-use. Creating an Outdoor Room for Dining and Entertaining

The finished outdoor room brings together layered Sunbrella drapery, bronze hardware, Restoration Hardware furnishings, an outdoor area rug and the surrounding landscape.

Fully open, the drapery frames the views and architecture. Partially drawn, it provides additional sun filtering and creates a more intimate environment for dining, entertaining and holiday gatherings.

The project illustrates how custom drapery for a covered patio or deck can be designed not simply as decoration, but as an architectural textile system responding to sunlight, wind, floor conditions, everyday operation and the way an outdoor living space is actually used.
