Lutron, Somfy, Crestron — what to pick, when to wire it, and how to keep the architecture clean while the drapery does the work.
What motorized drapery actually is
A silent track system that draws and stacks panels by remote, switch, schedule, or scene. The drapery itself is no different — what changes is the hardware and the wiring plan inside the wall.
Battery versus hard-wired
Battery systems (Somfy Sonesse) are fast to install, fine for retrofits, and require recharging every 1–3 years. Hard-wired systems (Lutron, Crestron) demand a low-voltage rough-in but disappear entirely and never need user maintenance.
Smart-home integration
Lutron QS / RA3, Crestron, and Control4 integrate cleanly. Apple Home, Alexa, and Google Home are workable as overlays. Specify the lighting system first, then choose the drapery system that speaks to it natively.
Where motorization earns its keep
Two-story windows, beam-mounted runs, screening rooms, primary suites, and any room where a panel is too high or too heavy to draw comfortably by hand. Coastal homes with UV protection also benefit from scheduled solar cycles.
Quietness, reliability, and longevity
A correctly specified motor is inaudible at three feet. Expect a 10–15 year service life. The first sign of trouble is usually a battery, not a motor.
